'Daisy Maskell - Insomnia And Me' (2021) - Documentary Review

Updated: Apr 9, 2023

Hey everyone,

During the coronavirus pandemic, there have been a lot of people quietly suffering with a lot of problems, including KISS FM Radio's host Daisy Maskell - who also happened to be a fellow classmate of mine during Primary and Secondary school. She has been dealing with insomnia since the age of 14 years old. Insomnia can either be the difficulty of getting to sleep or the difficulty of staying asleep during the night, and she speaks openly about her concerns of this problem, and how it could potentially affect her as she begins to get older.

In the documentary she is joined by friend Ellie Philpott and YouTube content creator 'Fabulous Han' to discuss their experiences of insomnia and raising awareness of how they are all dealing with this issue quietly, but how much awareness needs to be had with this topic. Daisy also explains that as a radio host, she is used to going to bed late and waking up early, so she usually has a maximum of 2-3 hours sleep before her morning shows, and explains that she still has to put on a smile to millions of people around the world, but the sleep issue does affect her on a daily basis.

Whilst I was a student, I was also finding it incredibly difficult to either get to sleep or stay asleep as I had a forever changing schedule due to taking part in lots of extra curricular activites, projects and many spontaneous nights out followed by early morning at University lectures. Daisy is joined by a variety of professionals and individuals who are aware of this issue, giving her advice on how she can control it and potentially force her body to get back into an ordinary sleeping pattern rather than just taking tablets, which is the standard way of dealing with these types of issues that affect mental and physical health of young people.
