Conan Gray 'Overdrive' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone!

In today's music video review, I will be taking a watch of Conan Gray's new video for 'Overdrive' which he released a few days ago! I discovered Conan's music whilst I was presenting a one hour show on the radio, and had a list of 'trending songs', and I believe two of his songs 'Checkmate' and 'Maniac' were both on the list, and his voice sounded incredible, so I had to listen to the rest of his music!

Conan is seen in a train station at the beginning of the video, dancing along to music which he is listening to through his headphones. He's also wearing a really cool outfit consisting of a black buttoned shirt and a brown jacket, with his natural curly hair down to his shoulders! He seems to be carrying a lot of documents, so they could be lyrics for his future songs, or he's off to an important meeting as part of his day to day working life! The one thing to take note of at the beginning, is that a train seems to speed past him, and it happens to bring back a memory, as he takes his headphone out and looks across the platform...but what or who does he see?

Some of the opening lyrics to the song include Conan spending a weekend with somebody, not catching feelings...and then realising that he actually does have feelings. There are various shots with him and his female lover, whether it's in their bedrooms or whilst they're both working in a restaurant kitchen. I say working, but they both seem to be having lots of giggles, playing with the cooking utensils and dancing around all of the tables. This could be a sign that they're more into eachother, and prefer to make love rather than working! Other lyrics sung include 'don't give a f*ck about labels' and 'roll the dice on the table' which are both hinting at just being spontaneous, rather than sticking to any rules or regulations within their relationship. There are more shots of the couple dancing and singing in red telephone boxes, playing with glitter and sequins, with Conan singing the words 'I don't wanna see no red light' - relating to red traffic lights, or not wanting to see 'red' in their relationship!

Towards the end of the music video, Conan and his new lover seem to be dancing and singing in the dark, standing next to eachother and looking into eachother's eyes at the train stop, which must have been where they both travelled separate ways. The video cuts back to both of them jumping into a pool, and then driving down the highway with the nice shots of the city and their street lights in the background. There are a montage of their favourite shots featured towards the end as well, including when they were both working, the Ariana Grande styled party in her bedroom, and both of them standing and hugging one another, with their eyes closed because they know that they are about to say goodbye to eachother! Conan seems to take his headphones out again (which is the same shot as before), and notices the female lover standing on the other side of the train stop, going in the other direction to him, which is a really crazy thing for him to see. She doesn't even notice him, so it's almost like she's forgotten about him and already moved on with her life which is really sad to see, or that he has continued feelings for her, but she just doesn't know about it!
