Hey all!
In this blog post I am going to review a song and music video of a Nottingham based singer/songwriter called Chloe Rodgers who has released several singles with music videos over the last few months, including 'A Delphian Lullaby' and 'Faces'. For today's review, I will be taking a watch of her newest music video release called 'The Algea'!
At the beginning of the music video, you can see Chloe in a golden outfit in a gold and pink environment which looks really aesthetically pleasing, and she's also showcasing her lovely blue hair which features in some of her other recent music videos. One of the things to notice is that there is a ballerina spinning around in the box, which could signal that there is some form of control in her life, or she feels like she has to try and please other people instead of just being able to focus on herself.
There are some really nice shots filmed at Newstead Abbey including when she walks on the grass next to the river wearing a white cotton shirt with matching trousers, spinning around with a beautiful sunset behind her. Some of the lyrics in this part of the music video include 'my heart is sinking'...and 'yearning for something that is deep' which could both be related back to the feeling of being in love, 'deep' referring to previous relationships that might not have meant much, or that she didn't feel comfortable being in. She goes on to sing the lines 'I supposed I should just take off my clothes for you' which could signify that in relationships that is just the standard thing that happens, or she is maybe trying to show sarcasm by stating something that isn't going to happen, if she wants to fall into deep love.
Another shot in the video that I really liked is the panning shots around Chloe, with a final shot staying still for several moments in front of the church-like looking building as this gives you time to look at the surroundings and listen to some of the other lyrics. The next transition it to close up shots of Chloe through a reflection into a mirror, with a leaf positioned at the top, giving a vibrant and almost vintage style of shoot. Other shots include a close up of Chloe walking out of a dark tunnel, several shots which feature another characters that looks like Chloe, also with blue hair - but that could either be her imagination, accidental or her looking at her past when she wasn't feeling very happy with her life, in terms of love or relationships.
Other lyrics include 'who are you to tell me what I'm worth' which is something that a lot of people should take note of...In your life, people will say and do things that might not be acceptable or needed, but the best thing to do is try and ignore it, realise your self worth, and aim to achieve whatever your life goals are no matter how many negative comments or views you get! Towards the end of the music video, there are some more shots of Chloe spinning around, with interesting vocal sounds which help bring some of the final lyrics together. The final shots show the ballerina box being closed, and the final line 'won't you lay with me, I'm tired' being sung - which could signify that she is tired of fake love and relationships that don't work, but instead wants to finally lie down after all this work, with somebody who she truly loves.
I really liked the lyrics to the song and the concept of the music video, so great work to Chloe, the camera operator and the editor! (Autonomy Creative, Anna Tiani, Friction Collective and Mannie James among others!).
