'Caroline Flack: Her Life and Death' (2021) - Documentary Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone,

It's been over a year since television presenter Caroline Flack took her own life after dealing with online abuse and trolling, when she was accused of domestic abuse claims over her then boyfriend Lewis Burton, an ex professional tennis player. Channel 4 premiered a one hour documentary discussing the incredible highs and awful lows in her life, and her experience from a young girl to the 40 year old who we knew and loved as the host of Love Island UK!

In the documentary her mum Christine and sister Jody open up about the really high highs or incredibly low low's of Caroline's life, and her journey into showbiz which started at 16 years old when she went to a drama school in Cambridge. Her family revealed that she didn't deal with heartbreak very well and whilst at drama school she took a lot of tablets and often hid her emotions on how she felt. Some of her earlier work included working for the Xtra Factor, promoted to The X Factor in 2015 alongside runner up Olly Murs and then was most predominantly known for hosting the first 5 series' of Love Island - but one of her agents explained that this was quite iconic, as she was having problems with her own love life.

Throughout the programme, Dermot O'Leary and his wife revealed the first time they met Caroline back in 2011, and Olly Murs revealed the online and trolling abuse Caroline was getting online, including a #Fathers4Justice campaign who had a caption on their poster titled 'this is what a domestic abuser looks like' which must have been horrific for Caroline to see online. Christine Flack, her mum revealed that there would be numerous calls from Caroline to her, asking her to come over and then changing her mind and saying that she was 'fine'. Before her first trial in December 2019 for domestic abuse claims against her most recent boyfriend Lewis Burton, she had been in a short relationship with Prince Harry before the media know about it, and was known for being in relationship's with One Direction's Harry Styles and even engaged to Andrew Brady from The Apprentice. Anna Brady, Caroline's agent from 2015-2020 admitted that she would often get messages from Caroline, stating 'I've got a new man and you're really going to like him' but they never seemed to be the right guy for her. Her mother added that she was good at her job and she had so many people that liked her, and wasn't sure whether it was the trolls, accusations, the fact her self harming story became publicised in magazines and newspaper headlines, or whether it was a mix of everything.

On 15th February 2020, Caroline unfortunately passed away as she took her own life, and was soon later buried on 10th March 2020.
