BBC Radio 1's Outreach Programme 2021

Updated: Apr 28, 2023

Hey everyone,

In today's blog post I will be summarising 3 of the available 10 sessions that I attended as part of BBC Radio 1's Outreach Programme before the 'Big Weekend of Live Music 2021'. The sessions were titled Journalism, Media Business and Film & TV and were hosted by those already in different parts of the creative industries.

Journalism: 16th May 2021, 1:30pm - 2:30pm

In the first session I joined, called Journalism, Katie Thistleton presented the session alongside BBC Newsbeat's Calum Leslie, Sports photographer Naomi Baker and BBC Journalist Kash Jones. They all discussed their journeys into the journalism world as well as answering a variety of topics, including; how to decide which stories make the cut, the importance and relevance of the apprenticeships schemes, pressures during crucial moments of sports matches/games as a photographer, accuracy of the information shared to the world and also a piece of advice they would give to budding journalists wanting to get into the creative sector. I tweeted along with the panel, and the main thread can be found at:

Media Business: 18th May 2021, 5:30pm - 6:30pm

In the second session I joined, called Music Business, Radio Host Clara Amfo hosted the session and she was joined by Patrick Hough from Warner Records, Negla Abdela from Ministry of Sound, Oksi Odedina from 5K Records and Rianne Thompson, from BBC Radio Tees. Some of the topics that were discussed, were the entry level roles and jobs that each of the panellists were in before 'breaking into' the industry, the change of gears throughout the pandemic of hiring artists but also working remotely and even some of the benefits of being an intern for a media organisation. Clara also touched on the failures of the industry, explaining that 'Failure is just as important as success', and all of the panellists explained the best and the most challenging parts of their current job roles. I tweeted along with the panel, and the main thread can be found at:

Film & TV: 26th May 2021, 5:30pm - 6:30pm

The third and final session I attended was hosted by Radio Host Jordan North, and he was joined by Director & Burna Boy Videographer, Cordell Johnson, Eastenders Writer, Celia Morgan, 'The Rap Game' Casting Producer, Elisha Mansuroglu and Writer & Director, Oliver Milburn. Topics that were discussed included the day to day life of working in film or television as a videographer, editor, manager or even as a writer. They each explained their individual journeys into their current positions as well as what skills are needed in the industry as a whole. I tweeted along with the panel, and the main thread can be found at:

Thank you to all of the amazing speakers and creatives who took part in the above 3 panels, as well as the other 7 that I haven't attended, giving advice and knowledge within their specific fields, and inspiring the future generations of creatives and workers in terms of planning our careers, building connections and being able to break into the industry!
