BBC One's 'I Can See Your Voice' hosted by Paddy McGuiness - TV Review

Updated: Oct 23, 2023

Hey everyone,

Another day another television show! Today's review is of Paddy's new television show called 'I Can See Your Voice' which is all about being able to see a voice rather than listening out for it. The guest celebrity panel included Alison Hammond, Amanda Holden and Jimmy Carr, with guest judge Danny Jones from boyband McFly. The good singers would be telling the truth about everything, and the bad singers would be lying about their singing experience. There was a total of £10,000 up for grabs, and in the first episode, Lee and John were the contestants, and they're a couple who wanted to take their 2 adopted children to Disneyland Paris!

The first round was called 'First Impressions' where the celebrities and contestants had to choose who they thought could sing, purely based on how they looked. Paddy added 'bad is good and good is bad!'. The 6 performers were called 'Rising Star', 'Teacher', 'Party Kind', 'Queen of Clubs', 'Pitch Perfect' and 'Songwriter'. In the first round, Lee and John decided to eliminate Party King who was actually called John Chimbombe and he was a bad singer. His job was as a club promoter and he sometimes sang, which Amanda replied to with 'and they stayed?' which John said 'they stayed, and they bought more drinks!'.

The second round was called 'Lip Sync' and each of the 5 remaining singers had to perform a song, either lip syncing to their own voice, or a random person's vocals. Teacher performed 'Livin' Da Vida Loca', Rising Star sang 'If I were a boy', Queen of Clubs sang 'Deeper Love', Pitch Perfect sand 'You Give Me Something' and Songwriter performed 'My Favourite Game'. Jimmy Carr stated 'did that voice look like it came from that?' speaking about Pitch Perfect, and Alison added that she thought he might have a good voice. Amanda thought that the lads at the Rugby club bet him to appear on the show, and Lee and John decided to eliminate him from the game. He was in fact a good singer called Emmo, originally from Ireland and cousins with Brian McFadden from the boyband Westlife!

The third round was called 'Unlock My Life' which gave the contestants the opportunity to find out more information about 2 of the remaining 4 singers, and then they would have to eliminate 2 of them from the game. They decided to find out more about Rising Star and Queen of Clubs. Rising Star explained that she was a full time musician, her teacher helped her apply to Brit school and her aspiration was to travel the world and perform. She previously worked in Brighton behind a bar...Queen of Clubs explained that she was a dance fitness instructor, 50 years old and from London. She decided not to go full time with singing as she was progressing in her career as a banker and didn't know where singing was going to take her. Danny said that 'if you love something so much and you're passionate about it, you stick with it', and the boys decided to eliminate both Queen of Clubs and Rising Star. Queen of Club's real name was Maxine Jones, who spent the 90's on the dance floor, but was not a good singer, and Rising Star's real name was Melissa Cheker who never attended Brit school and just enjoys listening to Beyonce, but also was not a good singer!

The fourth and final round was called 'Interrogation' which allowed the contestants to ask quickfire questions to either Teacher or Songwriter, which Paddy called a 'Criminal Singing Investigation' (CSI). The boys decided to interrogate teacher, and after the quickfire questions admitted that some of his answers weren't detailed enough, and Alison added that 'when someone's telling a lie, they look to the left first!'. Paddy revealed that if they were able to choose a good singer, they would win £10,000, but if a bad singer tricked them, then that individual would walk away with the prize fund! Lee and John eliminated teacher, whos name was in fact James Muldoon and had performed for 20 years, also appearing in Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat. Amanda asked 'what kind of teacher can sing like that?' and he revealed that he was in fact a performing arts teacher!

The final part of the show saw Danny Jones duetting with the final singer known as Songwriter, and she was also a good singer, which meant that the boys Lee and John won the £10,000 jackpot! Her name was Bethan-Wyn Davies and she had written over 60 songs, and had released a song called 'Get To Know You' earlier this year.

Each week, Alison, Amanda and Jimmy would be joined by a guest judge, and they would continue trying to help contestants win money! I think the concept of a show is quite similar to previous shows that have been on television, almost merging a singing, talent and audience involved television show together, but it was great to watch, and all of the celebrities have their individual personalities which blended really well together! They are most certainly the dream team, so after the 8 episodes of Series 1, let's see if the show will be back for a second series!
