Anne Marie 'Therapy' - Album Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey everyone,

For today's blog post, I will reviewing Anne Marie's latest album called 'Therapy' which was released earlier in July 2021. It consists of 12 songs with some tracks that I have heard before, and others being brand new! Below, I will write my review for all of the songs and the meanings that I get from the lyrics!

1- 'x2'

The first song on the album is called x2 with the initial opening lyrics including the words 'have you ever seen a b*tch lose it' and 'everything you did to me, I'm going to do to you times two' which signify that Anne Marie is going to have revenge on somebody who has treated her wrong. She goes on to sing the lyrics 'have a little patience baby, take that', which could expain that she is taking her time to work out the best way that she can take revenge. This song is a symbol of female strength and not letting any guy mistreat her, or think that they can get away with it either.

2- 'Don't Play' (with KSI & Digital Farm Animals)

Up next is a collaboration that I didn't realise I needed until I heard it. British YouTube sensation and rapper KSI, teamed up with Digital Farm Animals and Anne Marie to create this incredible track. I think the words 'Don't Play' relate to not playing with somebody's heart. Some of the lyrics that KSI sings at the beginning of the song include the words 'you're online but you're airing all my messages' which leads into the words 'hoping you see my snap because I'm not ready for us to wrap' which explain that he is speaking to somebody on multiple social media platforms; WhatsApp and Snapchat included, and he's not receiving any replies. I think both Anne Marie and KSI have been through a similar situation where they are being ignored, but it's the worst way for a relationship to end. It's better for both people to be honest and explain that it's not working and trying to find a solution rather than letting eachother 'play games with my heart' as the lyrics continue to say, as you're not sure whether somebody likes you or not.

3- 'Kiss My (Uh Oh)' (with Little Mix)

The next song on the album is a 4 way female collaboration with Anne Marie teaming up with Perrie, Jade and Leigh Anne from Little Mix who all came together to sing a female ballad explaining that their secret lovers seem to only be interested when the girls want to leave the situation, with the 'uh oh' part of the title meaning..backside, as those guys are not worth it. In the second verse, Jade explains that she 'knows the games you play' which could relate to the different excuses or sweet talk that guys come up with in order to win girls back, but the girls have grown up a lot since their previous relationships and they're all collaboratively explaining that they don't need to put up with this anymore. When I heard that these two artists were going to collaborate, I had no idea what the outcome of the song would be, but I was absolutely not disappointed!

4- 'Who I Am'

The next song on the album is a self confidence track where Anne Marie explains that she may have her flaws but that's just who she is. She explains that she is stubborn and for people to 'ask my mother, she knows'. She goes on to sing that she likes crying too much, which might not necessarily be a bad thing, as it shows that she has emotions. Anne Marie also sings the lyrics 'you can love me or hate me, nothing's going to change me' which explains that she may be different to other people, but she's done with people telling her how she should and shouldn't act. Other topics she speaks about includes the fact that she's in too much drama and doesn't need fake friends. I can totally relate to this song as there are some people who are destined to be in your life forever, but there are also those people who are temporary friends and don't really deserve anything from you. The final part of the song is summed up with Anne Marie singing the word 'Sorry' as she's not apologetic about being straightforward and honest.

5- 'Our Song' (with Niall Horan)

In the next track in which Anne Marie collaborated with One Direction star Niall Horan, the lyrics of this song seem to explain that although the people they are singing about are no longer in their lives, the fact that a specific song begins to play on the radio, it brings back all of the memories that they had with those people. During the chorus, they both sing the lyrics 'it's just a song on the radio that we used to know', bringing them back to reality, but also explaining that they can't stop smiling about the good memories that they did experience. I think this is another relatable song that helps people bring back all the good memories and times with somebody, especially if they were to end their relationship or something separates them with somebody special in their life.

6- 'Way Too Long' (with Nathan Dawe & MoStack)

Up next seems to be another throwback romance song where Anne Marie explains that she is in love with somebody but now they are 'nothing but a song' and goes on to say that she can't stop thinking about them and how they were. I think the meaning of the song is that it has been quite a long time since the good times and she's reminiscing on those times now. MoStack's rap verse in the song was also quite cool as he sings the words 'forget quality, I want quantity' and goes on to sing about some of the girls he would like to get with, including Estelle who he says 'can you wine for me' and 'even Mabel's good for me...who's the chick for me, it's Jade from Little Mix for me'. Overall, I love the shoutouts of the other female artists in the industry at the moment as it gives them the platform that they deserve, but also this song was really bouncy and is definitely a motivator to not forget about meeting with your mates or loved ones for too long.

7- 'Breathing'

The next song on the track is quite an emotional ballad where Anne Marie seems to speak about how she's sitting in somebody's car with their 'hand on my thigh', and she explains that 'now you're here, don't ever go far'. This could signify that she has finally found the right guy for her. Anne Marie goes on to explain that 'now I'm in love, can you believe it...that being in love is just as easy as breathing' which is such a unique way to explain the feeling of love, if you haven't been in a serious relationship, and I'm actually very happy for her! She also explains that she feels very sorry for the girl that he used to love as they have made the biggest mistake. I think this song is a celebration song for finally finding 'the one' so let's see if this individual makes it to Anne Marie's Instagram page anytime soon, or maybe a music collaboration if he is a singer/songwriter or even a producer! It could also be a she, who knows!

8- 'Unlovable' (feat Rudimental)

Up next is a song which seems to completely have the opposite meaning from the song above which was about love and relationship, with this song about being unable to find somebody who understands her. She explains that she's 'looking for someone to take me as I am', adding that she's a 'broken mess' and wonders at night time if there is anybody who could love her. I think that's one of the things about having dreams late at night, it often allows you to reflect on your life and brings a lot of bad thoughts to your head, when you should be trying to take every day as it happens, thinking that the right person is out there for you, and time will bring you together. Anne Marie also admits that she's 'so used to being lonely' which is why she may have some of these negative thoughts at night time before she goes to sleep, and actually, it could help you become more positive in the morning as you can focus all your energy on being your best self!

9- 'Beautiful'

The next song on the album is a song where Anne Marie reflects on whether she finds herself beautiful. The lyrics in the beginning part of the song explain how she looks in the mirror and sees 'so many things I want to change', admitting that she 'doesn't like this stranger staring at me'. I think one of the things about looking about yourself all the time, can often make you find things that are wrong about you, when in fact it's just your mind playing tricks on you. In the chorus of the song, Anne Marie questions whether we are beautiful, 'are we beautiful?...all of us, because we've got something natural', which should be a positive message for everyone, as everyone is beautiful in their own ways. She also explains that she's 'got more than all these scars...I got flaws and broken hearts' and this is a brave thing to speak about as somethinbg in the public eye, but although she has gone through all these bad times, she's one of those people who has pushed through, and using her voice to speak up about things and for people that she believes in, knowing that with hope, things will go the right way!

10- 'Tell Your Girlfriend'

I believe this song exposes a guy who probably wanted to try and get with Anne Marie, but was already in a relationship with a different girl. She explains that he can 'get on your knees' and beg for forgiveness, but she adds that she's 'gonna tell your girlfriend what a liar you are' adding that it would be her pleasure. Anne Marie also asks how many times she has to say no, suggesting that he was either really interested in Anne Marie, or thought he wasn't going to get caught. She goes on to praise the girlfriend as somebody that was too good for him, adding that she was taken for granted, and he 'don't know what you had'. At the end of the song there is a cheeky giggle from Anne Marie as she knows that she is not in the wrong at all, and it's easy enough for both her and the other girl to find new boyfriends who will treat them right.

11- 'Better Not Together'

In this song, Anne Marie seems to have come to the realisation that her and this special somebody that she is singing about are better apart, than together. She says that 'I knew I was playing with fire from the day I met you', signifying that it could have been a bit of a complicated relationship from the first time they met. She goes on to sing that she doesn't wanna fight or say goodbye, she probably just wants to be in a stable and secure relationship. During the pre-chorus she asks when they will realise that they are not good together, although 'neither of us want to be together, we're losing grip but we can't let go' which is a sentence that almost doubts itself. It's kind of explaining that they don't want to be together, but they've been through so much together that they can't actually separate themselves from eachother. Another lyric which has a similar meaning is where Anne Marie sings the words 'screaming at the top of my lungs and then I'm pulling you closer' which again signifies that she can be in a very angry mood, but then all of a sudden want to get close to this individual and make up. It's an emotional ballad song which results in both people in this relationship either staying single or moving onto new relationships, but not forgetting about everything they have gone through together.

12- 'Therapy'

The final song on album is a song where Anne Marie begins the song by explaining that she is disfunctional and that 'it's always been that way', adding that it's nothing personal, but she naturally pulls people in to push them away as she could have second doubts or doesn't want to force something with somebody if she doesn't think it's going to last. She goes on to explain that she thought 'love was the answer to all of my problems, and kissing your lips was the key' which is a good way to think about love, it's just about finding the right pair of lips I guess. Towards the end of the song, Anne Marie goes on to sing that maybe she is better on her own, and she might just need some therapy in order to work out a bit more about herself, her ways and how she can finally find long lasting true love.

I really enjoyed writing this album review as some of the songs I have actually heard before doing the review, and there were a few collaborations that I was excited to see, including 'Kiss My (Uh Oh)' with Little Mix! All 12 songs are amazing, and I'm sure AM3 is already being written and recorded as we speak, so let's see who she will be working with in the new year, and whether she will have a new sound! At 30 years old, Anne Marie looks and sounds incredible, and who knows where she'll be in the next year, hopefully still showcasing her bright pink or blonde hair and maybe even writing for other artists when her own solo career starts coming to a close! Anyways, until next time, thank you for reading!
