Hey all!
For this music review, I am #throwingitback to the good old days of The X Factor! Back in 2010, Cher Lloyd took part in the show and placed 7th. She nstantly signed with Syco Records before releasing her debut single 'Swagger Jagger' and going on to collaborate with amazing artists including Demi Lovato on a song called 'Really Don't Care'. Cher has since released TWO new music videos, one for 'Lost' and most recently for her 'One Drink Away', so without anymore delay, let me react to the music video!
I think 'impressed' is an understatement to describe this music video. From beginning to end, my eyes were peeled on Cher's outfits, the dancing and the overall concept of the music video. I am so thankful artists like her have managed to break into the American music industry and this song proved why she had potential to be a superstar from day 1! The opening scenes have a black and green vibe, and it seems like something out of Doctor Who's tardis (but in a really cool way).
Some of the first lyrics that I was able to note down were from the chorus where she sings 'Please don't touch me, just keep off me, don't go asking for no favours' which is something I can definite relate to in terms of clubbing and going out. I think the simple meaning behind the song is that she understands she is a pretty girl, and even if she didn't think that...she doesn't want anybody coming upto her to try and talk to her, dance with her or offer her drinks...because firstly she's married, and secondly she's grown up from her younger days! The final part of the sentence where she says 'Don't be asking for no favours' could mean that there's no use in going to talk to her mates to pass on a message, or try and persuade them to let Cher speak to them, because again, she's not interested. In addition to this, she sings the line 'I cannot be friendly, why are you calling me baby' which could also signify that people are treating her very weirdly, or she doesn't want to have casual friends, it's friends or relationship..and no in between. I like the overall sass throughout the whole of the song, which is shown through her singing, dancing and performance.
I think in terms of the progression of Cher's music, she used to sing about the naughty boys or negative situations, and instead of speaking about those now, she's coming from the angle of 'I've grown up and I know what I stand for'. Being in the public eye makes it 110% more difficult to keep things to yourself, so being able to express yourself in several minutes, discussing difficult topics so openly and also being blunt about it at the same time, make Cher a singer that will probably be around for quite a while!
In the final scene, I liked the style of curtains which were able to show the natural sun shining through the little gaps, giving a vintage or orange kind of look. She was wearing a black crop top with a variety of jewellery which was a common clothing style throughout the whole video, with slight changes in her hairstyle of top layer of clothing! The other thing to notice from the music video was the different flashing lights of colours (including purple, red white and green in each of the rooms, giving each room it's own unique style. Obviously the name of the song is called 'One Drink Away' and when she was singing those lyrics, she stated 'I'm only one drink away from saying what's on my mind' which means that anymore alcohol inside her body, and she'll probably spill some 'tea' on something or someone. Another great single and music video from Cher Lloyd, and at only 27 years of age, I think she's far away from her retirement from music!
