The Weeknd 'Save Your Tears' - Music Video Review

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Hey all,

Today's music video is presented to you on the weekend, by an artist called The Weeknd (Yes, without the third 'e'!). He released a new music video at the beginning of January 2021 to accompany his song 'Save Your Tears', so here's my review!

Before I even watched the video, I wasn't sure if there was something wrong with his face, as it looked like he had a lot of plastic surgery...but after doing a search on the Internet, I believe this look was part of his character in the video! This single was released on the album 'After Hours' at the beginning of 2020, but I thought I would review the newest music video by The Weeknd!

To start, there were lots of green and black lights to set a little bit of a weird environment and feeling, even before the singing began. He was wearing a bright red jacket and showcased his afro hair, which made his character in the music video look like a 60's performer! 95% of the cast were all wearing golden masks - including the pianist, almost trying to hide their identities. My interpretation of the video is that the audience are all his friends, family, or 'supporters' that don't want to identify themselves, but have all gathered in this one venue to support his life choices, no matter right or wrong. I described the initial sounds of the song like 'creepy electronic background instruments' which was a vibe that occured throughout the entire song.

Some of the first lyrics that caught my attention was the line 'You could have asked me why I broke your heart'...followed by 'You walked past me like I wasn't there'. Both of these lines could explore the theme of jealousy within the relationship, and instead of being open about their actions, this particular individual might have just wanted to erase the memories from her head about The Weeknd. He then went on to dance around the audience, and I liked the obvious comparison between his shiny/bright outside and their grey/black attire, which helped to convey him as the 'leading act' or the most important entertainer for that particular ceremony.

Other lyrics he sang included 'Save your tears for another day' - a longer version of the song title, and after singing that line, he began spraying the audience with wine, and started drinking from the bottle before quickly spitting it out (He might not be a fan of that particular wine...or it might have brought back bad memories of the person that began ignoring him??). The video continued, and saw The Weekend holding a big golden trophy, to maybe identify him as a 'winner' or 'champion' in terms of finding love...but then throwing it away angrily into the audience, which could symbolise the relationship he had with somebody as being truly over. There was a video shot of a girl in the audience, with curly brown hair, wearing a blue dress and white gloves, whom The Weekend began dancing with on stage. Little did she know, he was holding a gun behind his back, but after a transition to the next scene, she was now holding the gun up against his forehead. I think this could also show signs of power in a relationship, and that both parties had negative intentions or thoughts, and it was best to both go separate ways before something horrific happened to one of them.

In the final scene, the shots are all red, like fire and The Weeknd is continuing to dance on the stage. My thoughts at this point in the video are whether or not he was dreaming about being on stage or the centre of attention; Was the girl real or was she from his past?. If I finish watching a music video and I have to ask myself a variety of questions about the content, then the artist, director and the team have done a great job of putting something creative together...and 99% of the time I have questions or thoughts! There were aso some close up shots of his shiny black shoes, similar to those of an old style music video, wth those continuous flashing lights in the background. At the end of his performance, he holds the gun to his head...shoots the gun...and confetti comes out. He begins smiling and laughing, the audience cheer, and the music video comes to an end! Great way to end on such a suspense shot...something similar to that out of a movie!
