Another interview that I had to do was with Darcy Riman, one of the coaches for ‘Trent Tigers’ gymnastics team at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). We pretty much asked her the same questions as we asked Ollie Judd; (apart from why she applied for her job role as VP, as she isn’t the VP and it would have been silly to ask her such an irrelevant question). We did the interview in the sports area at the NTU City Campus in one of the quiet rooms next to the sports hall. Below, I have written up the general dialogue from our interview:
Brandon: Hey Guys! I’m actually here in a lecture room today with Darcy Riman, the Captain of Trent Tigers. So, for those people who don’t know what ‘Trent Tigers’ is, can you give a brief description?
Darcy: Yes, of course! So, it’s a society at Nottingham Trent; a sports team and it’s a combination of stunts, tumbles and dances. We have a competition team and we also have a varsity team who compete at the varsity games so Uni of vs Trent. The competition team actually compete in University championships and different competitions over the country.
Brandon: So, just a quick continuation question for that one then. What made you join a sports club?
Darcy: The reason I joined a sports club was because I have been part of a cheerleading team my whole life; always been a part of a cheerleading team. I think that is what’s important to me, because it helps me meet new people, wanted to get the best out of my University experience and exercise is also really important too. That’s the main reasons!
Brandon: So again, following on from that question. Why did you decide to become a captain for cheer?
Darcy: As I said previously, I have been doing cheer for many years, so I feel like I have a lot of experience within it. I thought that the skills I have could be utilised within the team and to be able to be on the cheerleading committee, you kind of need to have experience within cheerleading beforehand. I really wanted to do it for myself as well. I felt that it would be a good experience for me, and also give me life skills as well as coaching skills that may be used later on in life.
Brandon: Why do you think people should be involved within sports clubs/societies?
Darcy: I think that new students should be get involved because it helps you gain friends, gives you skills within things you’re going to need and takes your mind off your studies. It also allows you to be able to meet new people and I think it reduces mental health. If you are going through a dark time it can help you take your mind off it, and studies show that exercise can actually increase your good mental health.
Brandon: Why do you think sports clubs are important for University culture?
Darcy: I think it’s something new to try. It also looks good for the University, giving them good publicity and helps to bring in more money as well.
Brandon: What would you say to a prospective students who wants to join a sports club/society? Darcy: I would say you should definitely do it, as it’s the best thing that I have done since being at Unviersity. I definitely wouldn’t have had the friends now if I didn’t join a society. I also wouldn’t have the skills, and my CV is a lot more broader now with so much more experience on it. The life experience that I’ve gained means that I’m a lot more independent now. And all around really, it’s just the best thing that I ever did.
Brandon: Thank you very much for reading this little interview, and thank you again Darcy for being in this interview!
