A working holiday in Germany?!??

Updated: Apr 28, 2023

Hey Guys!

Long time no blog. Just to update you all, I’m now legally 21 years old, which means I can drink alcohol in the United States (if I ever have enough money to go and visit). I’ve also recently come back from a FREE trip which was organised by the University…to Germany!??!!

Several months ago, I was helping one of the employability staff with filming some interviews of third year Media students and second year History and English students and a few days later she called myself and my friend Indi Johnson into her office about a proposed trip away. It was organised by NTU Global within the University and was in theory, a free trip for us, with everything paid for, including accomodation, breakfast and dinner at the hostel, flights there and back and spending money whilst away. Apparently DMU in Leicester did a similar project where they sent 1,000 of their students abroad, to see the similarities and differences between Leicester and the visited countries and how they could make both cities smarter and more creative so I’m guessing that NTU was inspired by that but only had enough funding to send 50 students away.

We were told that 50 NTU students were hand picked to go to Karlsruhe, Germany and the other 50 would go to Timisoara, Romania, with the ability to also interrail to various countries and cities before reaching these two final destinations. We were set two briefs; one was to film a short promotional video about interrailing and travelling abroad, and a longer video which would include interviews and conversations with the students. This would help us get more of an in sight to their journey whilst interrailing, but also understand the transport they used, and any of their opinions of how to make Nottingham more creative and smart.

In total 4 NTU Media students were sent to each country to fulfill the tasks; myself, Indi Johnson, Thomas Walmsley and Olivia Dodgson were sent to Germany, and Ella Farnsworth, Harriet Lockie, Alex Robinson and Michael Goulding to Romania. It was an interesting few days with lots of late nights and early mornings, but I think that I have learnt a lot more about myself and the way I work, as well as coming to the reality that the media industry is definitely where I want to go into the future!

After coming back from Germany, I edited the videos that I had filmed content for out there, as well as filming content for the briefs we were set, and also filmed a ’20 things I learnt at 20′ video which will all be linked below:

One other amazing thing about the place we visited in Germany (Karlsruhe) was that there was SO much architecture and so many amazing buildings which I had to photograph. We also had lots of amazing speeches and talks by people from a variety of different organisations and company; including those who dealt with air pollution, transport, 3D design, personal branding, development of start-up companies and electronical devices on transport.

The one thing that was slightly off putting about the trip, was that a lot of things were planned out TOO much, and although it’s good to be stuck to a schedule, a lot of the students did get bored of some of the events, especially when there was lots of talking! I’m probably going to make a YouTube video (or two, or three) about the full experience in Germany, and hopefully get Indi, Olivia and Tom to join me in a video to talk about how they found the experience and what they would change for next time!

Anyways, just thought I’d let you know what I’ve been upto recently, and currently I’m just sitting on my bed editing some future YouTube videos..Obviously I am pre filming way in advance as I have a lot of University deadlines and don’t really have time to focus on too many extra curricular projects, my YouTube channels or my blog!

I’ll be back soon, I promise!

Bye xoxo
